Bright phosphors are obtained upon doping ternary alkaline earth thioaluminates and thiogallates with lanthanide ions. Especially when divalent europium (Eu~(2+)) is selected as optical dopant, technologically interesting phosphors are obtained, showing an emission band with a saturated color that is tunable from blue to yellow by interchanging the alkaline earth ion (Ca, Sr, Ba) or the trivalent metal (Al, Ga) (see Fig. 1).
