Sometimes we find ourselves in a unique position to challenge the environment we work in for a better outcome. Seldom do we accept the challenge and test the status quo with something a little different. This paper, Rural Solutions for Rural People describes how a small health service in rural Australia has met the challenge of providing for the care needs of persons with advanced dementia, so that those people may continue to residewithin their familiar rural community.Australia has by world standards an excellent health system. But there is a divide between those living in the cities and those in the country areas. It is evident by a reduced life expectancy and by reduced service choice. In 2006 the National Framework for Action on Dementia was released by the Australian Government (AHMC, 2006). The increasing prevalence of dementia and a range of priorities were identified including improved access and equity for dementia care. People living in remote and rural locations were noted as having particular challenges in accessing services. Although there is a progressive roll out of new options under this National Framework, there are still significant gaps across the spectrum. The more rural the location, the greater the gap becomes.
