A constructed wetland was developed to analyze the water quality purifi cation of severely polluted wastewater. The forced downward and then upward movement of the polluted water against an impermeable barrier elongates the polluted water fl ow path. The constructed wetland of Hongdong reservoir in Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do was selected as the research fi eld of this study. The area of the constructed wetland is 100 m3 and its water depth is 1.5 m. The results of this study show that a higher residence time of the polluted water in the fi ltering medium could purify SS and organic matters of high concentration. In conclusion, the overall results of this study show that by elongating the polluted water fl ow path by forced down and up movement is a feasible alternative to purify organic matters and severely polluted wastewater.
