A constructed wetland was developed to analyze the water quality purifi cation of severelypolluted wastewater. The forced downward and then upward movement of the polluted wateragainst an impermeable barrier elongates the polluted water fl ow path. The constructedwetland of Hongdong reservoir in Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do was selected asthe research fi eld of this study. The area of the constructed wetland is 100 m3 and its waterdepth is 1.5 m.The results of this study show that a higher residence time of the polluted water in the fi lteringmedium could purify SS and organic matters of high concentration. In conclusion, the overallresults of this study show that by elongating the polluted water fl ow path by forced downand up movement is a feasible alternative to purify organic matters and severely pollutedwastewater.
