Global climate change is expected to lead to increasingly negative impacts on water and soil resources and agriculture that are vital for food production and food safety. Agricultural production is affected by changes in climate, in particular through increased variability in rainfall and a higher frequency of extreme events (fl oods, droughts, storms, heat waves etc). Climate change affects the function and operation of existing water infrastructure – including drainage and irrigation systems– as well as water management practices. Total land resources of Turkey is 77.95 million hectares (Mha) and 28.05 Mha (35.98%) of it used as agricultural lands. Currently irrigated land area of Turkey is about 5,73 Mha and constitutes 22% of the total irrigable land. Total annual surface runoff amounts to a volume of 193 billionm3 of water. Contrary to the common belief, Turkey is not rich in water reserves and approximately 74% of water resources is allocated to agriculture.
