Evaluation of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose accumulation in the larynx -comparison between normal subjects and unilateral vocal cord paralysis cases

The purpose of this study was to reveal the trend of FDG accumulation in the larynx in normal subjects, and to conduct quantitative comparison of the uptake on between the side of unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP) and the normal side in patients with UVCP.In 25 of the 28 patients with UVCP examined in this study (89%), a higher level of accumulation was noted by visual inspection on the non-paralysis side than on the paralysis side. None of the three patients who showed no higher accumulation on the non-paralyzed side had malignant disease.Unilateral accumulation of FDG in the larynx suggests vocal cord paralysis on the opposite side other than a malignant tumor.
