The microcirculation in rat spinotrapezius muscle fascia is studied using a comprehensive computational approach. The simulations use a realistic network structure obtained from microscope images and consider both blood rheology and vessel elasticity. An apparent viscosity model for blood considers vessel diameter, blood hematocrit, and the local shear rate. The vessel elasticity model includes passive dilatation of vessels as well as active constriction in arterials. Many diseases first manifest themselves in the microcirculation and an improved understanding may help with early detection and treatment [6].
