Mineral carbonation has been recognized in recent years as an advantageous method of sequestering CO2. The benefit of mineral carbon sequestration is being the most permanent and safe method of carbon storage, since the gaseous carbon dioxide is fixed into a solid matrix of Ca and Mg-bearing minerals forming a thermodynamically stable solid product. Waste products such as alkaline industrial residues could be used as feedstock for CO2 sequestration, as they generally possess highly reactive calcium and magnesium species, suitable for achieving high and fast carbonate conversions.
