Over the last decades worldwide energy demand has been rapidly increasing. Moreover, it is estimated that fossil fuels will not be able to cope with future energy needs. The use of biomass as an energy source is therefore considered as a viable alternative to the use of conventional fuels. In fact, the studies regarding the use of biomass, as well as organic waste materials for energy purposes are continuously increasing, aiming to liquid, gaseous, as well as solid biofuels. Spent coffee waste (SCW) specifically, as one of the most widespread elements of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste, may be taken into consideration for this purpose. SCW has been used by certain industries as fuel for their boilers.
