The total number of aerated landfills is increasing. The technology has been proven to be efficient in terms of emissions reduction and sustainable bio-stabilisation. Nevertheless, creating aerobic conditions in landfills changes the microbial metabolism and is often associated with a significant increase of the waste temperatures (up to 70°C). This may lead to operational difficulties as well as a decreasing efficiency of the aeration process: reduction in moisture content due to increased evaporation, increasing risk of potential waste self-ignition, limitation of certain metabolic reactions (e.g. nitrification). It is then important to understand both, the bio-chemical and physical processes associated with the increase in waste temperature. Furthermore, options for temperature control and limitation have to be evaluated in order to come up with adjusted operation concepts.
