One-dimensional models have been used to predict the settlements of municipal solid waste (MSW) in sanitary landfills. However, they do not incorporate important aspects, such as the occurrence of horizontal displacements. 2-D models could describe the behavior of MSW more realistically. Although the development of some complete 2-D models (Machado et al, 2008; McDougall et al, 2008), the application of these models to landfill monitoring data are not common. This papers aims at evaluating the applicability of 2-D elastic models (linear and non-linear -hyperbolic) to assess the MSW behavior during the filling of a specific cell of Belo Horizonte landfill, comparing the results with field monitoring data.
