To prolong current life span landfill, a possible method is to excavate the aged municipal solid waste (MSW) and separate the combustibles for thermal treatments, for the combustibles (upper sittings) constituted of a major portion (45-62%) of the aged MSW on a volume basis. Pyrolysis will produce high calorific value fuels with lower emissions in the process, the produced fuels could be easily used for power generation and heat supply, especially as pyrolysis process carried out for waste plastics, high quality oil can be obtained. In the pyrolysis process for the combustibles or waste plastics, the quality of three products, namely gas, oil and char will be different. To improve the pyrolysis process, pyrolysis process for the separated waste plastics and for the upper sittings of aged MSW were compared by checking the yield and quality of the products.
