Last THREE years' experience with major polytrauma: a comparison with the Regional Trauma Registry

This retrospective study analyzes a group of 21 710 patients, who were hospitalized at our Trauma Centre over the period 2001-2009 suffering trauma. Indicators of outcomes and diagnostic and therapeutic resources have been examined. A homogeneous subgroup of major multiple trauma patients, who were hospitalized from 2007 to 2009, was compared to RRGT1, the regional registry of major trauma of Emilia-Romagna. The overall analyzed data represents a useful parameter to determine the use of resources in trauma management. Overall mortality rates and resource indicators seem to validate implemented protocols. A significant improvement of some indicators, with respect to the RRGT, was registered within the last three years especially among the group of the analyzed major traumas. It is therefore arguable that these protocols may represent a viable and clear reference point for all trauma care providers.
