Endoscopic stenting for colon obstruction. A suitable approach as a bridge to elective surgery and palliation

We evaluated the outcome of patients with colonic obstruction and treated with self-expanding metallic stent (SEMS) for palliation or as a bridge to elective surgery and of those who underwent emergency surgery. One-hundred and twenty-four patients were admitted with large bowel obstruction. Seventy-four (59.6%) of 124 patients were treated by endoscopic stenting. Forty-two of 74 (56.7%) patients had SEMS placed as a bridge to elective surgery (SEMS group) and 32 (43.3%) as palliation. Fifty of 124 (43.3%) patients underwent emergency surgery (ES) without stenting. Obstruction was successfully treated by SEMS in 94.6% (70/74) of the cases. When compared with ES, the SEMS group had a significant reduction of surgery-related complications and a shorter hospitalization.
