Oil heat exchangers in fighter aircraft are prone to cracking,which results in jet fuel contamination of the jet engine oil.This compromises the oil's properties and creates a flight hazard.The current standard methods detect fuel contamination of oil at a concentration above 0.2%.However,the Israeli Air Force sets the upper limit for fuel contamination at 0.1%.Herein,we report on a straightforward method we developed based on a portable photo ionization detector for the determination of jet fuel contamination in engine oil with an upper limit of 0.1% (w/w).The method developed is robust,employs readily available equipment,and is ideal for making go-or no go-decisions in field conditions.
