In the present study, photochemical oxidation ofan alcohol ethoxylate (AE) was experimentally explored.Poly(oxyethylene) (4) lauryl ether, commercially known asBrij30~R, was selected as a model AE. Persulfate (PS)/UVCoxidation of aqueous Brij30~R (20mg/L) was investigatedat a wide range of initial PS dosage varying between 0.5-5.0 mM and at two initial reaction pH values (3.0 and 6.0).The results obtained for both initial pH values indicatedthat increasing PS dosage did not have a significant effecton Brij30~R removal efficiency and higher than 90%Brij30~R abatements could be achieved after 60 minutes oftreatment time. Total organic carbon (TOC) removals weresignificantly improved with increasing initial PS dosagesfor both initial pH values tested. PS dosages higher than1.5 mM yielded higher than 90 % TOC abatementefficiencies. Second-order reaction rate coefficients forBrij30~R and TOC with sulfate radical (SO4?-) was determined as 1.62×109± 3.5×107 M-1s-1 and 1.2×106 ±2.39×105M-1s-1, respectively. Toxicity of PS/UV-C treatedaqueous Brij30~R solutions towards the marinephotobacterium Vibrio fischeri was also investigated todetermine the possible toxic behavior of oxidationproducts.
