Odours discharged from various humanactivities may cause severe damage to residents. Forappropriate evaluation of environmental odours, it isnecessary to develop a reliable odour measurement scale.Odour intensity, a kind of main sensory odourcharacterization parameters, reflects people's perception ofodours and contributes to effective odour management. Inthe past study, Japanese conventional six-point odourintensity scale was reconsidered and a new series of sixdilution steps of 1-butanol prepared in Erlenmeyer flasksand explanatory labels were proposed. In this study,polyethylene (PE) bottles were selected as containers for 1-butanol odour intensity reference solutions for conveniencein on-site handling. Effectiveness of PE bottles wereinspected based on comparative odour intensitymeasurements using Erlenmeyer flasks and PE bottles.Applicability of PE bottles for odour intensitymeasurement of hydrogen sulfide was also investigated.The results suggested that PE bottles could be substitutedfor Erlenmeyer flasks as containers for 1-butanol referencesolutions, especially in the middle intensity level. Althoughodour intensity evaluation of hydrogen sulfide wasaccompanied by greater variation, mean odour intensitieswere relatively discriminable. In conclusion, theeffectiveness of PE bottles as containers for 1-butanolodour intensity reference solutions was suggested.
