This paper presents some of the results obtained in aresearch project focused on the use of paint sludge as amodifying agent in the production of bituminous bindersfor paving applications. The scope of the project was toprovide an innovative, sustainable and profitable solutionto waste management problems which automotiveindustries have to face worldwide as a result of theproduction of paint sludge. Following laboratoryinvestigations carried out with the cooperation of an Italianautomotive company, the authors applied for a patentwhich defines the industrial process for the production ofpaint sludge modified binders. This papers highlights someof the critical aspects which affect technological feasibilityand environmental compatibility of such a process.Technological issues are addressed by referring to the flowbehavior of binders during production and to theirresistance to segregation during storage. Environmentalissues are examined by considering gaseous emissionsduring binder preparation and the potential leachingbehavior of corresponding bituminous mixtures employedin road paving operations.
