Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) is a rather new engineering material. As a result, the engineering community has little or, in some cases, no knowledge of its performance capabilities. For engineers to specify ADI, the full array of engineering properties must be available to them for their designs. This paper will summarize the work that is being done to quantify and codify the properties of ADI. Carbidic and Ferritic ADI hybrids, machining, gear and fatigue properties, wear behavior and ASTM, SAE and ISO standards development will be reviewed.
