The identification of "An Apparently New Transmissible Disease of Cattle" in 1946 started fascinating and frustrating attempts to understand the agent involved and to define the spectrum of clinical diseases associated with the agent1. From the perspective of over 60 years later it is a bit difficult to understand the emergence of BVDV as the most important cattle disease by the mid 50's.
