The exposure to electromagnetic fields related to mobile communication devices has rapidly increased over the last decade, and concern still remains on possible human health hazard To define the risk, the effects on neuronal cells are of particular interest taking into account the widespread use of mobile phones for which the source of radiofrequency (RF) is very close to the brain. In the present study, rat pheochromocytoma cell line (PC12) was employed, as a model of neuronal-like cells, to evaluate the cytotoxic effects ofIRF radiation. Cells were exposed for 24 h under strictly controlled conditions of both dosimetry "and environment, to 1950 MHz, UMTS signal, at specific absorption rate (SAR) value of 10 W/kg. The results obtained indicate that RF radiation was not able to affect cell-viability of PC12 cells, as assessed by means of membrane integrity and metabolic activity assays.
