Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology has become a well established process that is utilized throughout the world as an activated sludge option for advanced treatment and recycling of municipal and industrial wastewater. Survey data obtained from the eight major MBR vendors clearly demonstrate that the number of MBRs in operation worldwide has increased from 6 in 2000 to 166 in 2011 and the treatment capacity has increased from about 10 MGD to 650 MGD (Oppenheimer, 2010). By utilizing low-pressure membrane filters submerged or adjacent to the conventional activated sludge (CAS) reactor, the volumetric loading rate is de-coupled from the solids separation process and the MBR can operate with a much smaller footprint and superior effluent quality in terms of solids and associated pathogen removal compared with what is typically achieved in a conventional system utilizing a clarifier (Adham and DeCarolis, 2004; Zhang and Farahbakhsh, 2007; Ueda and Horan, 2000; Hirani et al., 2007; Ottoson et al.,2006).
