UPDATING TESTING APPROACHES IN THE NWRI/AWWARF UV GUIDELINES

The NWRI/AwwaRF "Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidelines for Drinking Water and Water Reuse" (the Guidelines) were released in 2000 and updated in 2003. They are widely followed, especially for water reuse applications and a growing number of secondary wastewater applications where best practices for, bioassay-based sizing are embraced. Some of the guidance relating to UV reactor validation is unnecessarily restrictive in light of new advances in testing methodology that have emerged since the Guidelines were written. This paper addresses two of these issues by discussing the related theory and presenting comparative full-scale UV reactor test results that verify the new techniques produce equivalent results to the old ones.
