RETROFITS THAT MAKE CENTS

By using available historic billing data for Rowland Water District (RWD) customers, HDR Engineering, Inc. (HDR) was able to prepare a cost analysis showing the great value in retrofiting sites to irrigate with recycled water instead of with potable water. The result is proving to translate in significant savings for the customers and the RWD, an increase in revenue for RWD and a decrease of 40 percent in potable demand. Starting in 2007, HDR was contracted by RWD to develop data to identify customers considered as good candidates to switch from potable to recycled water for irrigation. RWD's objective was to reduce the amount and cost of purchased imported water, and better manage limited water resources for its customers. Since 2007, RWD has constructed recycled water mains through some of its arterial streets and retrofitted 50 sites from potable to recycled water for irrigation, with more work planned. This technical paper will provide details on how this was accomplished (and currently being accomplished), focusing specifically on the retrofits from potable to recycled water for irrigation, an investment that is already paying off for RWD and its customers.
