An estimated 95% of the municipal desalination plants in the United States are inland brackish water facilities. The growth in numbers and capacity of these plants has been steady if not dramatic. Technological improvements have improved performance and decreased treatment costs, although cost remains a limiting factor. Within the past decade concentrate management has become an important and sometimes feasibility-determining factor. For desalination to become more cost-effective in the municipal setting, these two issues, cost and concentrate management, represent the two major areas requiring attention and solutions.
