Determining Feasibility of Alternative Approaches of Obtaining Solid-Dry Brine Effluent from Desalination Plants at Inland Locations.

The disposal of brine wastes that are generated from all known desalting processes is becoming a problem of major dimensions. The process upon which our study is based is a specialized MSF (Multi Stage Flash) evaporator plant operating on a seeded slurry recycle system. The study covers only the brine solidification aspects of treating the blowdown of an MSF distillation plant operating at an inland location on brackish water. The essential element in this study was to establish by empirical means whether or not any or all of four specified waters could be concentrated to dryness in a special type of multistage flash evaporator. The treatment plant is basically a pair of multistage flash evaporators,one of which receives blowdown from the base MSF plant as its feed water and which discharges its blowdown to the second;after further concentrating the brine stream,the second flash evaporator discharges to a single-stage crystallizer in which the last increment of water is separated off as product. Drawings of the equipment,the plant arrangement, a process diagram and a mass balance diagram are all included with this report. Cost estimates are reported.
