Battery strings including series-connected cells are widely used in electric or hybrid vehicles. In vehicles the battery strings may undergo frequent charge/discharge cycles. Because of the internal performance difference among the batteries, cells in a string may reach an undesirable non-uniform state over the course of many charge/discharge cycles. A variety of equalization systems are designed to solve this problem. Many of these approaches employ switching networks to selectively route charge to achieve balance. Due to limitation of current - carrying capacity of such networks, such approaches may not be desirable in high-capacity application such as vehicles. In this paper a new type of equalization circuit is designed. Compared with the current system, this system is more effective and energy-saving.
