Development of NISSAN X-Trail FCV - Real-World Testing and Various Promotional Activities

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. released its latest model X-Trail FCV in 2005 equipped with Nissan's first in-house fuel cell stack. These vehicles have undergone real-world testing in Japan and the United States and have supported various promotional activities around the world. Additionally, vehicles have been leased to government agencies and private companies in Japan and the United States. The promotional events enlighten the public about the hydrogen society and highlight one component of Nissan's Green Program 2010, which outlines our strategy for reducing environmental impact and being a Zero-Emission leader. Over 35,000 people have experienced the X-Trail FCV in the past 5 years. X-Trail FCV testing and events have accumulated over 900,000 km of real-world driving with one test vehicle over 190,000 km without stack exchange, and still running. Nissan has received very favorable comments about the X-Trail FCV, but the work to improve the technology continues. Long fuel cell stack life is crucial to commercializing FCVs. The operating life of Nissan's first in-house fuel cell stack was originally estimated from laboratory bench testing. We compared fuel cell stack performance degradation of actual vehicles with that from bench testing to establish new stack life estimation.
