Autologous serum was used to culture human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal cells (hMCs). Proliferative potential and biological activity in vitro, as well as osteogenic potential in vivo were assessed in the absence of differentiation induction. The hMCs, which had been obtained by primary culture from iliac cancellous bone, were used in the present study. Regarding the proliferation and biological activity of hMCs, our study revealed the following facts: 1) FBS has appropriate proliferative potential; 2) autologous serum possesses excellent potential to differentiate osteogenic cells; and 3) hMCs contain a group of cells that spontaneously differentiate into osteogenic cells in the absence of culture for osteoinduction.
