Biodegradable hemicellulose based films were prepared from three different lignocellulosic biomass including cotton stalk, sunflower stalk and corn cob. Hemicellulose was extracted from lignocellulosic biomass via alkaline pretreatment. The recovered hemicellulose was used in the production of biodegradable polymer films via solvent casting technique. Mechanical properties of the films were characterized by tensile testing. Effect of lignocellulosic biomass type on the hemicellulose yield and the mechanical properties of the films were investigated. Among different lignocellulosic biomass, corn cob gives the highest hemicellulose yield where biodegradable films obtained from corncob also possess the best mechanical properties.
