Equipment control processes used for electrical safe work practice compliance

World-class organizations use sophisticated control processes to ensure their success. These companies may use a combination of feedback and feedforward technologies to be either reactive or proactive to disturbances destined to upset their carefully designed systems. One of the hardest company processes to control has proven to be worker compliance to established safe work practices. Recently much has been done in the way of research to discover keys that counteract unwanted behaviors. Programs such as “Behavioral Based Safety” and “Human Performance Methodology” have emerged to take their rightful place in becoming the new trend in controlling unwanted outcomes. Unfortunately gauging the return in investment on a process that only has a return when something bad doesn't happen is difficult at best. This paper will explore the analogy and challenges of feedback, feedforward and cascade control strategies as applied to electrical safety. Workers that rarely encounter energized work, such as construction and some maintenance workers, may have gaps in understanding or other disturbances that can impede an expected “Safe Work Practice” in their daily routine. The same combination of technologies that ensure plant equipment reliability and long life can be used to produce similar results with the greatest asset a company has, the worker.
