At 2: 28 p. m., On May 12th, 2008, a earthquake(Ms=8. 0) invaded the wenchuan city, Sichuan province, south-western China (latitudinal 31. 00N, longitude 103. 40E). There are 560 billion dollars of direct economic losses and near 70,000 deaths in this arthquake. the earthquake damage of lifeline systems is investigated. In this earthquake, transportation system,telecommunicaiton and electric power are severely damaged in a large area because of strong earthquake motion, faults and surface rupture, landslides, and rock and soil collapses. pipelines are also damaged by active faults and ground subsidence. Dams are damaged by strong earthquake motion. Most f lifeline systems are damaged due to not only physical damages of equipments and buildings, but also the malfunction of other systems. This paper presents the performance assessment to the above four main lifeline subsystem and their seismic performance characteristics in this destructive earthquake. Some measures for resisting strong earthquake motion and secondary earthquake-induced geological disaster to lifeline system are also discussed in details.
