Cake filtration may involve an accumulation of solids that are compressible or substantially incompressible, corresponding roughly in filter-medium filtration to particles that are deformable and rigid. Filtration behaviours are strongly affected by the properties of the filter cake formed by the accumulation of the particles and/or the macromolecules on the surface of the filter medium or the membrane. The present study compares the compressibility factor of processing plant tailings in the Golegohar mining and industrial company and investigates its effect on filter selection. Sampling of hematite, magnetite, and poly-com tailings from three factories was done during one week. Cake moisture and cake-specific resistance were studied using vacuum top-feed leaf methods on the laboratory scale. The results showed that the compressibility factor of the three factories' hematite, magnetite, and poly-com are 0.41, 0.48, and 0.26 respectively. The high compressibility of cakes obtained from the magnetite and hematite tailings are due to particle size distribution and the amount of clay minerals in the tailings, respectively. So the most appropriate system for pressure filtration of tailings from magnetite and hematite processing plants is the membrane press filter. The bump press method was used to evaluate the moisture of the cakes. Filtration tests were done at a thickness of 6.6 mm. The results showed that the moisture content of the tailings from magnetite, hematite, and poly-com factories were 19%, 14% and 12.6%, respectively. According to the results, a membrane system is not required for the pressure filtration of poly-com plant waste.
