Water quality is an environmental concern at many mines. The Metals MiningSector of the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI-MMS) addressestechnical drainage-quality issues related to metal mining and metallurgicaloperations for future, active, and historical mines, and mining districts. One of theprojects of ADTI-MMS is to develop a handbook describing the best scientificand engineering practices for sampling, monitoring, predicting, mitigating, andmodeling of mining-influenced waters draining from metal mines, pit lakes andmetallurgical facilities. The handbook, titled "Sampling and monitoring for themine-life cycle," emphasizes that one of the important aspects of planning a newmine in today's regulatory environment is the approach in designing sampling andmonitoring programs to account for all aspects of the mine-life cycle. This papersummarizes this handbook. Data required for the closure of the operation areobtained throughout the mine-life cycle, from exploration through post-closure.Some of the most commonly used sampling and monitoring techniques arediscussed, along with opinions about which techniques provide the best data.
