Reducing carbon emissions from the utility industry is one of the most challenging tasks that face our industry today. While efforts to reduce emissions through increased renewable energy generation, higher efficiencies (both from a consumer and producer perspective), and increased nuclear generation, most experts agree that the availability of Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) technology is a requirement if significant emissions reductions are to be achieved while maintaining relatively low electricity prices. Challenges with current state-of-the-art technology with respect to capital costs, energy penalty, and lack of experience at scale predicate a large, integrated technology development program to insure compliance requirements can be met. As one of the largest coal fired utilities, Southern Company has been a leader in fostering the development of new technologies through a robust, stage-wise approach to support its compliance requirements.
