Latest LED-Projects in Germany: Energy Saving Potential, Lighting Quality and Evaluation of 10 state-aided Interior- and Street Lighting LED-Projects

LED-Technology more and more becomes a serious alternative for both conventional indoor and outdoor lighting solutions. While the number of negligible small pilot installation increases day by day, the market share of LED lighting products is still beyond expectations due to several reasons. This paper outlines the basic issues, aims and policy of a German state-aided project, which intends to shorten the time to market for solid state lighting products as well as to substantially reduce energy consumption in general lighting. Therefore the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in 2009 started the competitive project "Cities in a new Light" (ger.: "Kommunen in neuem Licht') in the framework of the programme "Optical Technologies". Altogether submissions of 141 German cities were made. In April 2010 at Light+Building fair 10 cities with outstanding ideas in saving energy with LEDs were selected by a jury. Each city now has a budget of 2 million Euro to realize its project within a period of 18 month, starting January 2011.
