With air quality regulations tightening for coal-fired power plants, flue gas desulphurization (FGD) processes are used to minimize the environmental footprint of the plant by mitigating the release of harmful emissions. Wet-FGD processes generate a blowdown stream that must be treated for contaminant removal (primarily heavy metals such as mercury and selenium among others) before this blowdown stream can released to the environment. In many cases, ZLD technology is required to comply with regulations specifically where conventional treatment is insufficient to achieve purity requirements or where the TDS of the FGD blowdown stream is above the discharge limit. This paper discusses the use of spray drying technology to achieve ZLD.
