The hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes, encode surface glycoproteins that are involved in pathogenicity, and are also the primary targets of the immune system. These genes undergo constant genetic changes (as 'drift and shift') and are responsible for the annual re-formulation of new vaccines.
