Basis for heritable proteome variation in aphids underlying vector competency is allelic. Vector allele of cyclophilin and other aphid genes is necessary but not sufficient to confer vectoring capacity. S. graminum cyclophilin interacts directly with purified YDV in co-immunoprecipitation experiments. Plant cyclophilin interacts with a related luteovirid, PLRV, and is down-regulated in plants during infection. These data indicate that luteovirids may use homologous pathways in the insect vector and plant host for movement.
