The use of mass spectrometry in a preparative mode started with ion deposition on surfaces and surface modification using ion/molecule reactions. Ion/molecule reactions are widely used in fundamental studies of chemistry and in analysis of chemical systems. However, their use as the basis for preparation of macroscopic amounts of material is very recent. The fact that ionic reactions occur at accelerated rates in thin film/droplets provides a new way of causing chemical reactions and collecting the products. Here we show that after Katritzky reaction was performed in the drop-casting thin film on paper, the product can be collected by depositing the paper spray droplets on an inert surface. The simplicity of operation, fast small-scale synthesis and feasibility of switching to on-line analysis make preparative paper spray attractive for building small chemical libraries.
