Investigation of an Impurity in Carboplatin Through a Forced Degradation Study

Carboplatin or cis-diammine(1,1-cyclobutanedicarboxylato)platinum(II), shown in Figure 1 inset, is an important chemotherapeutic agent used to treat several types of cancer. Due to its route of administration, the stability of carboplatin in aqueous solution is of particular interest. One of the degradation products reported in the literature is hydroxydiammine-(1-carboxycyclobutanecarbonyloxy)- platinum(II)1. The data presented here seeks to explore this impurity through high resolution accurate mass measurements of the precursor and product ions. Further, data from a simplified forced degradation study will be presented to try and explain the presence of the carboplatin degradation product.
