SSI -MS seems to be a very mild ionization technique, more so than ESI, as demonstrated for some labile compounds here. SSI -MS avoids the formation of redox artifacts that have been known to occur in many cases in ESI. Ease of operation of the SSI source makes it ideal for easy access operation, thus making SSI-MS potentially suitable for use as an open access MS platform. SSI -MS allows for simultaneous positive and negative ion detection under identical or similar solution conditions. LIBS allows for convenient metal detection, however, currently its high limits of detection require that significant sensitivity enhancement is accomplished before it can be used in combination with SSI-MS.
