Infants with BPD are at risk for post-neonatal death and have increased rates of re-hospitalization for respiratory infections as well as long term pulmonary complications. In ventilated preterm infants, suctioning of the endotracheal tube is performed using a standard non-invasive technique, and is a routine procedure to clear secretions obstructing the tube. This suctioned "lung fluid" or "tracheal aspirate" provides a sampling of the preterm lung fluid milieu. Proteomic profiles from preterm infants who developed BPD are being evaluated alongside similar preterm infants who did not go on to develop BPD.
