1. Cocaine and metabolites can be detected directly from the complex hair matrix. 2. Metabolites of cocaine -- even though significantly lower in occurance -- are identified directly from hair strands. 3. Long, mature Hair 1 and Hair 2: Cocaine and its metabolites are found a) 3 months prior to sampling (middle section) and b) 61/2 to 9 month before sampling (tip of the hair strand). 4. Spatially resolved the uptake of cocaine by the user is observed. Clearly, times of abstinence and druguptake are observed and differentiated. 5. Cocaine and its metabolites basically are observed at the identical locations within the individual hair strand. 6. Hairs of different length and age show different results: longer mature hair strands reflects the abuse including its time course, while short, young hair strands basically do not show cocaine or metabolites. 7. Further investigation of the herein presented approach such as a possibly improved matrix incubation and, in part icular, the analysis of a larger number of individual hair strands, is required.
