A review of additives in phosphocholine analysis by MALDI-MS and MS/MS: The introduction of nitrate salts

The use of additives in simple and complex lipid samples and in tissue medium are shown. Additive choice should be tailored with respect to the intended use. Careful consideration of additive concentration is also highlighted. Nitrate additives are shown to increase sensitivity of respective cationic adducts in complex lipid analysis as a concentration tolerant additive, highlighting the importance of counter anion choice. The advantage of increase sensitivity afforded by a nitrate salt is extended to CID product ion studies. The use of additives for the purpose of tissue imaging and apparent control of preferential adduct formation is shown.
