These results demonstrate that neonatal BMAA exposure induce long-term damage in form of neurodegeneration and astrogliosis in hippocampal CA1 region. No previous studies have demonstrated any distinct long-term changes in rodent brain after systemic administration and the results are the first clues for the mechanisms behind the previously shown cognitive deficits.
