Mass spectrometric approaches that function by comparing intensity of peptides in the MS1 survey level such as SILAC and dimethyl labeling schemes comprise a substantial percentage of quantitative proteomics research. These methods are relatively inexpensive and are easier for signal interpretation. However in proteomics applications, sample complexity at LCMS level requires robust and rigorous signal processing/analysis methods to achieve accurate quantitative measurements.
