When installed on a Waters SynaptG2, the APCI source provided accurate mass measurement within 2mDa of the theoretical mass. Consequently, molecular weight and elemental composition could be determined for compounds who seidentity was ambiguous by GC/EI-MS alone. Carboxylicacids were found to under go ion-molecule reactions in the source when methanol was used as aproton transfer reagent. In addition, carbonyl-TMS adducts were observed in carbonyl-containing compounds that also contained at least one TMS-susceptible functional group (hydroxyl oramine group). These ion-molecule reactions can be used to differen tiate between different functional groups with in anun known molecule.
