Rapid discrimination of community associated (CA)-and hospital associated (HA)-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus (VISA) is essential for appropriate therapy and timely intervention for cross-infection control. Although the commercialized MALDI protein profiling database could be a reliable method to identify the bacterial species, it is not yet able to distinguish the same bacteria specie with different antimicrobial susceptibility. In this study, we successfully identified two peptide as peptide biomarkers for the discrimination between CA-MRSA and HA-MRSA strains. In addition, two proteolytically processed peptides found in VISA strains could explain the high resistance to vancomycin and could be recognized as peptide biomarker for the identification of VISA strains. The detection of the peptide markers by MALDI-TOF could be an alternative method for the rapid and accurate identification of CA-MRSA, HA-MRSA and VISA strains.
