Membrane proteins are important to study as at least 70percent of all drugs today act on this group of proteins. Except for knowing which membrane proteins that are involved in various diseases, it's also important to know the structure of the protein when developing new drugs. Unfortunately is the 3D structure only known for a few membrane proteins and therefore is topology predictions of a membrane proteins an important tool. A variety of algorithms have been developed to predict the topology over the years. But the number of correct topology predictions are quite bad and varies between 60-80percent. A huge problem is the quality of the experimental data, which these algorithms are trained on.
